Then, understanding how to stop your dog from pulling the leash is of vital importance in overcoming those stressful walks. Many dog behavioral problems arise from the fact that your dog literally drags you along the street every time you take them for a walk. In plain simple English, your dog thinks that they are in charge and you are the follower and they are “the Pack Leader” – see our previous post on how to become the pack leader.

You need to fully understand that all these gadgets such as collars and leads out there will not help or solve the problem as long as your dog thinks that they are in charge – they think that they are the pack leader. What all these gadgets and devices do is redirect your dog’s energy where it shouldn’t go or simply cause pain whilst trying to stop you from pulling them. Think of it in this fashion, every dog understands that there must be a leader in every walk and they have already established themselves as the pack leader. We need to change this type of thinking from your dog before we even think of leaving the house.

Let us look at some key points to remember before we venture out with our dogs:

Only attach your dog’s leash when they are calm. This means that you will wait for your dog to calm down before attaching the leash even if takes a while to do so. Patience is everything during dog training. Your teacher was also patient with you at school – if he wasn’t, he simply wasn’t a good teacher. Never rush this stage. It’s also very important to understand that mastering how to walk your dog inside your house or property is the most vital step towards solving this problem. There are some fantastic videos showing all of this inside the online dog trainer’s website. When you start training your dog to follow you, simply do it around the furniture inside the house with your dog following you. Change direction every time your dog pulls in front of you – this is the trick. If your dog pulls in the opposite direction, simply hold the lead firm for at least 10 seconds then call them to follow you instead. This will most definitely work if you are patient and your dog will end up following you. Make sure that you are the first one to walk through doorways, your dog should always come after you.

Of course, reading about this is far less effective in learning how to stop your dog from pulling than actually seeing it in action. We have a website jam-packed with dog training videos for every dog or puppy obedience problem available for you to access immediately.
