Doggy Dan, the Online Dog Trainer - Maximizing the use of food treats during dog training - Part 1

Are you one of those dog owners whose dog only listens to when food is shown to them? Perhaps even worse, how about a dog that doesn't seem to care whether food is on offer or not? He just doesn't want to listen.
Imagine if the only way to make your dog listen was through offering food treats, doesn't even sound or feel right does it? What if I told you that there is a solution and it's not even complicated at all! That should put a smile on your face right away! I know I am already smiling before I even share this method with you. Why? Because it makes me feel good to help others solve their problems by providing proven solutions that simply work.
As you already know by now, I am affiliated with the best professional online dog trainer, at least in my opinion by the name of Doggy Dan and have four simple tricks that he always uses which I would like to share with you. Brace yourself, this just makes perfect sense.

  • The Jackpot method
Here is a simple question to put things into perspective: Wouldn't you be more motivated and excited by varying sizes of rewards your boss would give you at work than the same ones every time? The same applies with dogs, they are far more motivated and excited by rewards when the size of the reward varies. In simple terms, it's far more effective during dog training to give your dog a few smaller rewards followed by the big one; than just to give small ones all the time. This might sound simple but most if not 90% of dog owners keep giving their dogs the very same boring treat every time. That's right, the surprise is everything during your dog and puppy obedience training.

Doggy Dan, the Online Dog Trainer tells his favorite story he likes to call: "The story of the magic sausage" about a man who was very fond of feeding his dog off the BBQ. Does it really come to you as a surprise that this man's dog always sat by the BBQ begging for food every time it was fired up? Here is a simple recommendation that should be applied: Never feed your dog from the BBQ, rather wait until later in the day when the BBQ is turned off with everything cleared away and call your dog to you especially when they least expect it. The fun part begins here, as soon as your dog arrives and without expecting it; give them a whole sausage :)

What do you think your dog will think of you in that instance? "WOW,  you can produce sausages out of thin air!

Of course a whole sausage can prove to be too much if you have a small sized dog but I should assume that you get the gist.
  • What is even better to a dog than one big sausage?
The answer to the above question is really simple, it's the second secret to using food to motivate your dog which simply builds upon the first one; the Jackpot method. We are going to make the jackpot of one whole sausage more appealing to your dog. I know what you are thinking: How could you possibly do that without giving your dog two whole sausages? LOL! We are NOT going to do that! We are simply going to chop the sausage into a handful of nice pieces, perhaps 5 or 6.

I hope you are already getting the hang of this! Now when your dog gets the jackpot reward, make sure to feed them into your dog's mouth, as if all their Christmas has come at once. Trust me, your dog will never believe its luck. To them, it's more rewarding to get 5 or 6 pieces of the sausage than getting one whole sausage which they will most probably swallow in a couple of mouthfuls.

So there you have it, ever wondered what it is that could possibly be better than a whole sausage; 5 or 6 pieces of a chopped sausage are just what you need for your dog as the Jackpot reward.

  • Not all food is created equal
Let me ask you this simple question: What do you like best between Lemon Meringue pie and Chocolate Pudding? Naturally, we all have to have our favorite foods and the same applies to dogs too. With that being said, if you want your dog to perform like a rock star; make sure you know exactly what it is that spins their wheels. There is a significant amount of difference between a dog that is completely motivated to win the big reward than the one which is only half interested or half motivated. This is directly proportional to the variety of food treats your dog receives as a reward. Is it the same old dry biscuit you fed them for breakfast or is it some new  tasting ones this time around? Also try to think a little out of the box, its not about dry biscuits either; how about trying some healthy manufactured foods like chicken, bacon or cheese in controlled quantities as treats?
  • How about random rewards?
Before we proceed any further, I would like to mention our most important end goal which is gradually fading out food treats over time until they become random rewards. So there you go, your four simple ways to maximize the use of food treats during dog training.
